Substance Abuse Worker - Full-time

Position Overview: 

A Substance Abuse Worker provides basic supervision and assistance to clients of a residential substance abuse program. The Certified Adult Peer Support Specialist (APSS) provides assistance to clients of a substance abuse program using their unique lived experiences to guide and support others in some form of recovery.

Locations Available: Gathering Place, Jade House, Pearl House, IOP, RCD, Amethyst

Reports to: Director of Residential Substance Use Service  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a therapeutic environment:
    • a. Assesses positive, negative, and/or potentially dangerous mood and behavior change. Takes steps to modify the patient's actions or alert medical professionals.
    • b. Emotionally supports patients by remaining calm and professional.
    • c. Uses interpersonal skills and training about de-escalation to diffuse challenging situations.
    • d. Serves as a role model for the patients: in work habits (attendance, initiative, appearance, and flexibility) ii. by demonstrating the concept of being a team player in management of patient care.
    • e. Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information
  • Monitors and supervises patient
  • Documentation:
    • a. Records patient observations and documents all activity in an appropriate manner.
    • b. Records and monitors data on skill acquisition and maladaptive behavior on a daily basis and transfers the files to a computer.
    • c. Assists with implementation and intervention of treatment plans and documentation.
    • d. Monitors client progress toward their personal goals.
    • e. Charts on assigned patients according to policy and procedure. Reports to the unit nurse any significant information regarding the shift and activities.
  • Participates in and leads groups and unit activities:
    • a. Plans and executes activities with assigned children and adolescents during non-scheduled times and coordinates activities with Recreation Therapy staff.
    • b. Plans a creative activity to be implemented in a group setting (up to 5 clients) to focus on deficit areas (3-4 times per week).
    • c. Assists in therapeutic activities.
    • d. Facilitates activities, including recreational therapy, designed to teach daily living skills and enhance patients' social skills.
  • Staff Development, Training, and other related requirements:
    • a. Maintains annual trainings (includes infection control and SCM) and follows the infection control policies by maintaining annual TB skin test.
    • b. Maintains awareness of the policies related to the prevention and transmission of infection control (hand washing) and the utilization of personal protective equipment.
  • Meetings:
    • a. Attends staff meetings (a minimum of 8 per year) and assists with the training of new staff.
    • b. Attends all mandatory trainings and meetings designated by the SBA.
  • Models the mission and values of RiverValley Behavioral Health.
  • Fosters collaborative working relationships among members of the leadership and management teams and programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

*Certified Adult Peer Support Specialist also requires Kentucky Certified Adult Peer Support Specialist (APSS) designation

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess valid driver’s license
