Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's level nursing degree.
- Current NM LPN/RN license.
- At least one (1) year relevant experience working with the severely mentally ill in an inpatient or outpatient psychiatric setting.
- Knowledge of psychotic and mood disorders, their related medications and potential side effects, required.
- Must demonstrate specific additional training or experience in psychological therapies, building a therapeutic alliance, dealing with challenging behavior, and the administration of psychiatric medication. Must be knowledgeable of psychotropic side effects and how to evaluate for them (i.e. AIMS, observation).
- Having Charge Nurse or other related leadership experience, strongly preferred.
Performs nursing duties:
- Maintains, disposes of, and orders medications.
- Creates and maintains appropriate medication tracking and narcotic counting system. Maintains the security of narcotic medication.
- Disseminates medications to the appropriate staff and assures its return or that the forms are appropriately signed off indicating receipt from the client.
- Maintains the medication room and ensures that it remains up to licensing/pharmacy standards, including room temperature, appropriate storage, refrigerator temperatures, etc.
- Under the direction of the Nurse Practitioner/Psychiatrist, manages the system of getting medication to clients and integrating medication support into clients' individual treatment plans. Manages pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
- Assures that all needed medical supplies are appropriately stocked and medication orders/changes are noted and ordered in a timely fashion; expired supplies removed.
- In collaboration with other nurses on the team, coordinates, schedules, and administers medical assessments of client physical health, making referrals to community physicians as appropriate and coordinating psychiatric treatment with medical treatment.
- Provides symptom education to enable clients to identify their mental illness symptoms.
- Provides direct clinical services to clients on an individual, group, and family basis to teach behavioral symptom management techniques.
- Aids, assesses, and reports to team any changes in mental or physical status of client.
- Consults with community agencies and families to maintain coordination in the treatment process.
- Provides ongoing assessment, problem-solving, skill training, and environment adaptations to assist clients with activities of daily living.
- Provides nutrition education and assistance with meal planning, grocery shopping, and food preparation.
